Curse of the Feral Gods: Cover Pencil & Inks

All right, no big preamble here. I just figured it would be cool to share some of the art that went into making the cover for my last book, Soul Chaser Betty: Curse of the Feral Gods. This week it’s the pencils and inks, with the full color illustration coming next week (sans titles and letters).

I like to approach the covers of my books like any other illustration. On the one hand, I want the cover to represent the interior story, but I also don’t want to just repeat a scene from the book. In this case, I decided to make a “buddy picture” poster, with Betty and Sara back to back against the Feral Gods.
As you can see, I drew Sara’s hair as a minimal guide, knowing that all that detail would come in the inking stage.
Inking the covers is fun. Rather than treat it as just another panel, I try to up my game and treat it as a mini-illustration. However, you can see that I left a lot of areas blank, knowing full well that paint and color would fill in the details.
Just a little zoomed in shot to give you some idea of how much detail I try to fit into the covers.

Thanks for checking these out. These have also been added to the Drawings and Inks galleries, where you can find all kinds of cool art to ogle.

And of course, Soul Chaser Betty: Curse of the Feral Gods is out now in the shop!
