Salvage Hounds Preview: inks

Progress on Salvage Hounds Volume 2 is going well. I finished the pencils at the end of January, and I’ve switched gears to inking, inking, inking.

I got some great feedback on the book from my beta readers, as well. The book they read was fully lettered, but all the art was in the pencil stage. One of them assumed the art was done. They wondered why I just didn’t darken the pencils and move on to painting the art. Why trace the entire thing in ink?

Tracing?

My immediate reaction: “It’s not tracing, all right? Inking adds depth and shading to give the drawing definition. Only THEN does the drawing truly take shape.”

Any-who, here’s a bunch of random panels from pages that I’ve inked. I’ll also be posting some of these at full size (i.e. at much higher resolution) over at the Soul Chaser Betty Facebook page.

Olivia engages the space hopper’s thrusters and zooms through space in a hurry!
Fitz and Mi-Cha spring into action on the Mutt’s bridge. You can also see another, detailed shot of the space hopper here as well.
Fitz in the command module taking the Mutt into action. Note the textures I’m trying out on his dreads.
Syd and Olivia in one of my favorite panels. Syd definitely has fun hair to draw and ink, and I look forward to revealing more of her past with Olivia.
One of my favorite shots of Mi-Cha has her leaping into action to save Ana. This shot takes up a good portion of the page. I call these “hero shots” and they get more attention in terms of detail and finishes.

That’s it for now, I have to go dive back into the inking! But, I’ll have more pencils and inks to share, so check back soon.
