New Art: Martian She-Pirate!

More new art! This week I’m adding two versions of the same character, a Martian Pirate!

The original pen and ink drawing (which you can see here) was created just for fun, back when I was playing around with a bunch of new Japanese brush pens. These two color versions came later. Let’s check ’em out.

First up, at the top of the page, is Pirate Queen of Mars. This was another “hand colored print.” That’s where I take a black and white print of the original Martian Pirate piece and then use Copics (and a little acrylic paint) to create a unique color version. In my mind the character became a swashbuckling sky pirate as I worked.

Next up is a digital version.

An older ink sketch I colored digitally to use as a color cover for my “Inkling” art book, (and as an opportunity to play around with some new digital brushes).

This is the older piece, created as a color cover for my Inklings art book. That volume collected a ton of my pen and ink sketches and drawings, and I wanted to have some color versions for the front and back covers. (Death Knight 1 was the back cover, and can be found here). This version of the Martian Pirate was more of a jungle adventurer, I guess!

These two pieces will now live in the Illustrations Gallery.

More art coming next week!
