Slumber Party of DOOM! Cover Painting

It’s time for another art update. I’m adding a clean version of the Soul Chaser Betty: Slumber Party of DOOM! cover to the galleries

The image above is the cover sans letters. Many of you know that I often shy away from brighter colors, often choosing softer, more laid back palettes. That’s my color blindness at play, always telling me to go easy and tone it down out of fear. But around the same time I was working on this cover, I had also been in a rut, feeling like a lot of my recent work was getting too dark and muddy.

Once I knew the cover was going to feature a darker cover with lurking shadows, I realized that the characters’ colors should be pumped up to offset it, avoiding the murky, muddy hole. I wanted the shadowy feel, but I also wanted everything to pop!

I very much like the way it all turned out! These books definitely tend to draw the eye of readers at cons I attend.

Here’s the wrap around version, with the front and back covers together.

I had originally intended to paint this cover with a bright light behind the characters, for fear that all the darkness would get muddy. However, I took some good advice from a friend and reworked it into something more moody. I like the result, as the darkness makes the characters pop all the more, and works with the big baddie lurking on the left.

And here’s the isolated back cover.

Back covers often needs lots of room for text, so that’s what the “black hole” in the middle of the image is for. I also wanted to feature the “big bad,” but didn’t want to spoil the “full reveal” of his design, hence the silhouetted shapes.

These are now added to the Illustrations Galleryhttps://twilighttangents.com/galleries/illustrations/. Stay tuned for more updates!
