Saturday Sept 21, 2019 I’ll be exhibiting at the Galaxy Comic Book and Fantasy Art Expo in Joliet Illinois. This is my first year attending the show, and I’m excited to see what it’s all about.
There’s a couple of potentially cool things about this show.
One, it combines comics and fantasy art! Hey, I do both of those things! I love that about this show, because these two mediums have a shared history that goes back to the early 20th century. Superheroes may dominate the comic and pop culture landscape today, but for me, the core of comics has long been rooted in fantasy, from the early giants like Hal Foster, Alex Raymond, and Frank Frazetta, to the 70s comic art heroes that I grew up with: Alfredo Alcala, Estaban Maroto, Jose Gonzales, and Al Williamson. These were fantasy, sci-fi, and horror comics with not a pair of spandex tights in sight!
Two, this seems like it will be more of an intimate show, where fans and artists can talk and really connect, something that can be harder to do at giant corporate events. It’s looking like the show will be a great mix of established and well known artists, mixed with up and comers – an eclectic mix of artists, writers, and crafts-people.
Can you tell I’m excited for the show? I’ll be there with my latest art books, comics, and sketch cards, and I’m also planning on bringing a few of my original framed pieces for display and sale.
See you there!
