I’ve added a bunch of sketches and drawings from figure drawing classes here. In addition, you’ll find warm up sketches I’ve done from photo reference.

Figure on Knees - 2004
As is obvious, my approach to figure drawing is to take what I see from the pose, attitude and overall lighting, but to render it in my own, comic-book style.

Figure on Stomach - 2005
This was one of my favorite figure drawing sketches, probably simply because its a different kind of pose for me. I wound up using it in the Martian Harem illustration.

Figure Coy - 2005
Sometimes my figure studies concentrate on a more portrait approach. Here I was drawn to the tilt of the body and the expression of the model. I later turned her into a cave girl for another piece.

Figure Window
This was from a photograph of a girl at a window. I tried to capture her mood as best I could.

Figure Back Arch - 2005
This was a very iconic and chiseled pose. I wanted to capture her hip bones and striking profile.

Figure Sheet - 2004
This one was a fun pose. The sketch is tiny, and although I really didn't get much detail into it, I like the way the attitude was captured.

Figure Strong - 2005
Another tiny sketch, here I was obviously concentrating on breaking the form down into manageable, iconic shapes.

Figure Concerned - 2004
I really liked the thin limbs and delicate frame of this model, which her pose accentuated.

Figure Shoulder - 2004
This pose reminded me of the type of fantasy girls that came from the brushes of Frazetta and Barry Windsor Smith.

Figure Whimsy - 2005
This was a quick sketch from a photo, trying to capture the body language more than the details.

Figure Reclining 02 - 2001
I like the way this one turned out quite a bit. This was a 30 minute pose with a live model, which means that I had a lot of time to go back and add detail.

Figure Longing - 2001
This live model had dark black hair that was very Frazetta-esque. Jill had very nice shapes and a fit, yet soft, body.

Figure Thinking - 2001
I really liked the pose this live model struck with her hands and chin. This is a shorter 15 or 20 minute pose, and I think I spent most of the time on the face, hands and upper arms.

Figure Sitting Side - 2001
I started taking a figure drawing studio class in early 2001 to gain access to figure models. This was from the first night's session.

Figure Standing with Ball - 1997
This was probably a 15 to 20 minute pose. And yes, she was posing in a gym! Back at Viacom in the 90's we had some figure models come in to help us brush up on our skills, and we had them pose in the building's basketball court. You wouldn't believe how many non-artists suddenly became interested in art (but we kept'em out!)

Figure Sitting Cross Legged - 1997
When this live model disrobed, one of the other artists I worked with apologized for giving me grief about the impossibly perky busts I put on my comic girls... "My god, Anime breasts do exist!" she whispered...

Figure Sleeping - 2001
I had fun on this one with the lighting and shadows across the torso. I think the live model really did fall asleep...And got paid for it!

Figure Sleeping Tattoo - 2001
There was some nice shapes and foreshortening going on in this pose with a live model. Reclining figures are a difficult subject for many, myself included.

Figure Standing Back - 2001
This live model had a really nice tattoo across her back (as well as her ankles and wrists.) I like the way this one turned out.

Figure Close Up - 1997
I decided to do a close up of this quick pose because I liked the light and shadow on her face and the posture of her neck, shoulders and bust.

Figure Reclining Elbow - 2001
Another sketch from a live model. I decided to loosen up and just draw in my own style, rather then try to be realistic.

Figure Crawling - 2000
This one didn't come from a live model, but rather from a Japanese pose book. When you can't get a live model, they're the next best thing.

Figure Sitting with Sword - 1997
This one is of a live model named Danielle. She's posing here with the Samurai sword replica I brought back from a trip to Japan. She was very interested in the stuff we did at the game studio where the figure drawing session was taking place - and seemed to really have fun with that sword!

Figure Reclining - 1997
Another sketch of the live model, Danielle. Very fun to work with. She helped me out by posing for a few things I was working on at the time.
