Soul Chaser Betty: The Haunting of the Renegade Blades Finished Art Preview (part 1)

Page art for the new Betty book is pretty much complete! To celebrate, let’s take a look at some of the finished panels. Once again, grab the slider in each image to compare the original inks to the final gray toned art.

A Halloween story was long overdue in a comic series about teens encountering things that go bump in the night. Coming up with the costumes was definitely fun!
I’ve been working on incorporating more black shadows into my inks, but the gray tone stage is where I really try to push things with light and shadow.
I also get to play around with effects. Adding light source glows, changing the blacks to grays (note the trees in the background left), and adding textures for spells.
This panel is a great example of how the grays can add so much to the final art. Light, shadow, spell effects, and changing black lines to grays can add so much depth.
Here I am trying to use spell effects and lighting to bring out the drama!
Gray tone light and shadow also allows me to separate foreground and background focus, add contrast, and add more painterly elements like clouds.

Ok, so I lied about art complete. I actually have one (very important) panel left to draw. I’ve left that one till last but plan on tackling it as I work on drawing the cover. Speaking of which, the cover drawing is progressing nicely!

It’s all coming together! Stay tuned for another art update in a week or two!
