Another experiment from back in the day. At the time, I was taking figure drawings and doodles that I liked and using them to just play with different looks—in this case inks and watercolor / gouache.
Blade Dancer - 2010
One of my favorites, and also a popular print at cons (I wonder why...). I had actually done an elaborate costume for her bottom half, but left it out when it began to get too busy. Sometimes simple is better.

Angel of Temptation - 2010
I wanted to work on some "simple" pinups with this one, but by the time I was done with it, it had turned into something a little more complex with the detailed wings. Fun fact: This is the opposite of a phallic image.

First off, yes the wings are flipped. I'm lazy, get over it. Second, if you compare this to the inked version, you can see I played with the composition of the wings quite a bit before I was done. I jokingly contemplated calling this one Heaven's Gate. Its Yonic overtones only dawned on me after the basic wing shapes were in place. Well, I ran with it.
Angel of Temptation (Ink) - 2010
This was a good example of switching gears half way through an illustration. I started this thinking the figure would be reclining on a bed, with a weapon and the usual accouterments. Suddenly she sprouted wings, the composition completely changed and the final result was something very different.
Ouroboros - 2010
The overall composition was fun to design, and I had quite a bit of fun painting the wyrm. Sometimes it's nice to work on a piece that, while seems simple, has a lot of little details to work out.

I had originally planned on a lush jungle setting, with a saber tooth. The idea for the dragon only presented itself once I started to get going.

Sometimes you just start with a little figure drawing and then start adding stuff to it, until you have something more. The dragon went through a couple designs before I wound up with a fairly traditional (for me, anyway) segmented worm.
Red Handed - 2011
This was something that grew out of one of those tiny little sketches I do. I grabbed it and blew it up just to mess around with some digital inks, then ended up doing a quick paint over. It's simple and quick, but now one of my favorties.

One of my favorites from an inking experiment. I just had fun with it.
Far From Home - 2012
This pose just seemed like it needed a background, so I kept going after inking it. I'm pretty sure Tarzan is on his way to rescue her...
Accurate Barsoon - 2011
Readers of the original 1911 Edgar Rice Burroughs novel "A Princess of Mars" will hopefully like more accurate versions of a Martian Princess costume than the big budget movie "John Carter." Not that anyone could have put this onscreen and got away with it, let alone Disney!
Accurate Barsoom Hand Colored Print
Hand-colored print (that's a black and white print I then colored with Copics and acrylics to create a one of a kind piece). It was fun making a Barsoom princess costume more in line with the books, and for this Copic and acrylic version, I wanted a more realistic version of Barsoomian "reddish skin."
Dangerous Beauty - 2012
This one went through several iterations of costume for the armored glove. At one point she had a biomechanical armored glove that was creeping up her arm... I also wanted to experiment with doing blonde hair with a fine pen, which was fun.
Flame Hair (Dangerous Beauty)
In 2015 I went back to one of my pen and ink sketches and colored it with Copic markers. I believe this was a hand-colored print and not done over the original inks, but I no longer have the original. The idea of the red hair with a fade was what drew me to coloring it.
Vixen - 2012
This was just a small doodle from my sketchbook that I decided to play with. I had some new brush pens to try out, and I wanted to see what they would look like on the hair and the ground shadow.
Spear Girl
Back in 2011 I decided to take some of my figure drawing warm ups and turn them into something more finished. Some ended up as fully painted pieces (such as Blade Dancer or Red Handed) while others, like this one, ended up as simple color experiments allowing me to play around with new tools or techniques.
Smiling Cave Girl - 2008
I did this one to have as an original piece of art to take to Anime Central 08. It was fun working out the hair, but it was held back by using Microns instead of an ink brush.

Okay, another one that took up my whole sketch book page. I usually work tiny, but sometimes I try to get myself to work larger. This one almost turned out like a more mainstream, American "good girl" comic book style than the manga influence I usually sport.

This was a larger sketch than I usually do. I like the general pose, and the face and hair. But I really messed up on everything else.

With these cave girl sketches I wanted to explore long, dark hair. I think it's my Frazetta fixation creeping in again.
Cave Girl Portrait - 2007
I did this naughty little sketch around Anime Central '07. This is one of many, many cave girl sketches that I've done. In fact I've done so many I was able to put together a 60 page sketchbook for sale entirely made up of cave girl pinups. None of those sketches are currently on the site, but maybe I will get around to putting them up one of these days.
Cave Girl Portrait - 2009
Sometimes I like to do portrait style pinups. Its a change of pace, plus I get to concentrate on some of the things I really like drawing (Eyes, hair and jewelry).
Cave Girl - 2011
One of the things that attracts me to ink is the way it can be used to render hair. I enjoy creating a style that has lots of detail, but remains a deep, flat black at the same time, and I tried to do that with this sketch.

A Princess of Mars - 1998
This was the first time I attempted to illustrate the Barsoom universe. I wanted to create a riding Thoat that was different from others I had seen. Everyone asks me why the rifle is so big! That's because its a radium rifle used by the Green men of Mars, who stand 15 feet tall! John Carter can use it because he retains the strength of an Earth man in the low gravity of Mars.
Thuvia Tames a Banth - 1998
Thuvia is a young slave who learns to tame the ferocious Banths (lions) of Mars. While I like this one, I was never really happy with Thuvia's face.
Martian Princess - 2009
This was something I created from an older figure drawing. I wanted to do a fun and sexy pin up of a Martian Princess just for fun.
