Inktober 2019: RingNothing but fun to work on! As a fanboy of Tolkien I had always wanted to something cool with Gollum, and this piece set the mood for my entire 2019 Inktober run - working on positive and negative space to create depths and form.Inktober 2019 Day 02: MindlessI guess the keyword was just an excuse to draw a skeletal warrior. But, that's a perfect subject when working in silhouette and got me started on finding a style for the rest of the month.Inktober 2019 Day 03: BaitI wanted to do something that would combine a cartooning sort of whimsical joke with a bit more of an epic execution.Inktober 2019 Day 04: FreezeOk, who didn't draw little scenes like this one back in grade school? There is on;y one way to make sure that it turns out well, and that's by making "Pew! Pew!" sounds as you draw!Inktober 2019 Day 05/06: Build HuskyIn order to ease my Inktober burden, I decided to combine the keywords for Saturday and Sundays into one image. My mecha husky didn't exactly turn out very husky-like, but I still think he's a good boi...Inktober 2019 Day 07: EnchantedLandscapes are particularly fun to do in this silhouette style - it actually reminds me of my early days working on side scrolling backgrounds for SNES and Genesis.Inktober 2019 Day 08: FrailThis is one of the only 2019 pieces that relied a little more on line. My intention was to have the little girl's shadow stretch out into a demon, but I'm not sure that succeeded.Inktober 2019 Day 09: SwingThe end of summer. This was an exercise in building an emotional scene with as few elements or detail as possible.Inktober 2019 Day 10: PatternI was kind of panicking as to what to do for this keyword, but in the end, once I settled on the idea of patterns in nature, this became an almost zen-like experience. Sometimes it's fun to just do something almost abstract.Inktober 2019 Day 11: SnowWorking in positive and negative space lends itself so well to snow, so I knew that at least of my pieces would use that. Lo and behold, the day's keyword made the selection of which piece very easy! I was also playing Red Dead Redemption 2, so the theme was ready-made.Inktober 2019 Day 12/13: Dragon AshAh, when you combine your weekend keywords and it just all sort of works out. I added the color after originally posting it to Facebook.Inktober 2019 Day 14: OvergrownI thought this one would be a nightmare, but once I started laying in the snakes, it all started to come together quickly. The eye glow is a nod to Ray Harryhausen's Clash of the Titans.Inktober 2019 Day 15: LegendMy original idea was to have the silhouettes of goblin-like creatures rising up and attacking D, but the bats were much easier to read and more iconic to the vampire theme.Inktober 2019 Day 16: WildThis one was super fun, and I just kept adding detail to the jungle. Any excuse to draw something in the vein of Edgar Rice Burroughs is enough for me!Inktober 2019 Day 17: OrnamentI hadn't planned to add the eye and eyebrow. The plan was to just let the hair frame and define the character with the white negative space revealing the face and the jewels. But on a whim I put the eye lashes in and decided I liked the extra touch.Inktober 2019 Day 18: MisfitThis was kind of attempt to make something that might work as an old fashioned woodblock or ink stamp, iconic and simple.Inktober 2019 Day 19/20: Sling TreadThis actually took me quite a while. I just couldn't get the foot prints right. Once I added the blood to the prints and the spear, it started to come together as a concept.Inktober 2019 Day 21: TreasureMy original plan was to have a giant octopus in the scene, but as I started to experiment, it felt more thematic to have the mast of a pirate ship with tattered sails.Inktober 2019 Day 22: GhostThis was a throw back to pieces like Death Knight. I wanted to do something inspired by the creatures that appeared in Time Bandits. I added the color after it was posted to Facebook.Inktober 2019 Day 23: AncientI suppose this is another Tolkien inspired piece. I started with a black canvas on this one, working in the white and painting the webs up over several passes.Inktober 2019 Day 24: DizzyInspired by Robert E Howard's Solomon Kane tales. Another attempt to keep things simple, using the natural shapes of the positive and negative space to frame the action, and define the characters in relation to each other.Inktober 2019 Day 25: TastyThe Return of the Living Dead is one of my favorite movies, and when I saw the keyword, I immediately thought of the "tar man." This was a quick sketch, but it just seemed to flow, and I think it comes across in the final image.Inktober 2019 day 26/27: Dark CoatI was originally going to just let the coat frame the woman's shape, but the stockings ended up adding a little interest, help tell a story, and add a nice touch of color.Inktober 2019 Day 28: RideAny excuse to work on something Tokien, eh BMAN? I had some fun working on the Solomon Kane pterodactyl, and wanted to do that sort of take on a fell beast. Plus, it's quite liberating designing a character / creature like the Witch King in pure silhouette.Inktober 2019 Day 29: InjuredNausicaa of the Valley of the Wind! This was quite cool to work out where the positive and negative space would lie. Having the eyes shift from red to blue was not something I had planned on, but it not only helped bring the story of the film into the piece, it also helped to create a subtle depth.Inktober 2019 Day 20: CatchThe Dark Crystal is another one of those seminal films for me. With the resurgence on Netflix fresh in my mind, I thought it would be cool to do some Garthim.Inktober 2019 Day 31: RipeThis took way longer than it seems like it should have! I started over several times, but it was adding the mice that added some more interest and tell a story. BACK
