Salvage Hounds 01 Wrap Around Clean Cover
The entire front and back cover illustration. This was my attempt at doing a "movie poster" style layout. I can easily imagine this being a wrap around cover for a VHS or DVD slip case back in the day. Imagine coming across this movie at Blockbuster - I'd rent it!

Salvage Hounds 01 Clean Cover
This is an "expanded" version of the front cover, extending the image to include more of the bleed around the left and right edge. Normally the captain would be cropped as she "wraps around" to the back cover.

Salvage Hounds 01 Clean Back Cover
I liked the idea of doing a police line up for the back cover. I was able to use the original character/costume design drawings, and that helped me save a little time as well!

Slumber Party of DOOM! Wrap Around Cover Painting
I had originally intended to paint this cover with a bright light behind the characters, for fear that all the darkness would get muddy. However, I took some good advice from a friend and reworked it into something more moody. I like the result, as the darkness makes the characters pop all the more, and works with the big baddie lurking on the left.

Slumber Party of DOOM! Clean Cover
Once I knew the cover was going to feature a darker cover with lurking shadows, I knew the characters' colors would need to be pumped up. I wanted the shadowy feel, but I also wanted them to pop!

Slumber Party of DOOM! Clean Back Cover
Back covers often needs lots of room for text, so that's what the "black hole" in the middle of the image is for. I also wanted to feature the "big bad," but didn't want to spoil the "full reveal" of his design, hence the silhouetted shapes.

Curse of the Feral Gods Color Cover
I wanted this cover to contrast with the last cover I had done for Slumber Party of DOOM!, and that mention lots and lots of action!

Curse of the Feral Gods Wrap Around Cover
I love wrap around covers on comics! You want an ad on the back of your book? No, you want something that hopefully grabs the reader's attention!

Curse of the Feral Gods Back Cover
Here's the back cover, isolated. I think it's interesting to try and make a wrap around image that works with compositions for both the front and back, while leaving room for letters and logos.

Dragon Fire Copics
I decided to use some of my older pen and ink sketches to experiment with my new Copic markers back in the day. This hand colored print was one of the first attempts, with some white acrylic paint added for the embers.

Blood Mood Copics
Another pen and ink I decided to use as a way to experiment with my new Copics. An original The Witching Hour print was sacrificed so that I could create this hand colored version.

Prince of Demons Color
Inspired by the story of Azhrarn and Dunizel from the Flat Earth series by Tanith Lee. Check out Delusion's Master for the story of their ill-fated romance.

Prince of Demons Color (Detail)
Azhrarn the Prince of Demons only walks the Earth by night, for the sun’s harsh light would be the death of him. He falls in love with Dunizel, Moonfire, a woman who embodies the light of the sun, but only that pale light which is reflected by the Moon and Comet by night. Through her, he can experience a faint glimmer of the light of day.

Outlaw Queen - 2005
What do you get when you combine a new computer with a new version of Painter? The itch to paint. I made an effort to be more experimental and loose with light, shade and line weight with this one. I'm very happy with the way it turned out. This was also turned into a gaming scale mini by Dragonblood Minis (and later Cavalcade).

Reaper Queen - 2005
My third full-out go with Painter 9.0. Here I was trying to refine the process I've adopted of working with gray under paintings over detailed pencil scans, then layering in color. I really like the way this one turned out - it felt more solid than any of my previous efforts. This was also turned into a gaming scale mini by Dragonblood Minis (and later Cavalcade).

Witch Queen - 2005
This was my second go at Painter 9.0. I had begun to work with gray tone under-paintings, allowing me to explore light, shadow, and form without having to worry about color. Then, when I'm happy with the result, I layer in color with translucent washes and add details. This was also turned into a gaming scale mini by Dragonblood Minis (and later Cavalcade).

God of Thunder - 2009
God of Thunder began as a detailed sketch back in 1997. That drawing was abandoned by me as work on SepterraCore ramped up and was filed away in a portfolio. Back in 2008 I was going through older drawings and re-discovered it. My immediate thought was, "why didn't this ever go anywhere?" So I began to work on it again, re-creating the composition and updating the drawing to reflect how my style had evolved over the last 11 years...

Death Knight I - 2012
This was originally an ink sketch done just for fun. I decided to color it for use on the back cover of the Twilight Tangents Inkling Sketchbook. A more painterly version came later.

Death Knight II - 2013
This is the second color version of this ink.
Part of the impetus for a second pass was a desire to be a little more experimental in my choice of brushes and techniques. When I paint, I tend to avoid shortcuts and "cheats" and just try to paint as I would on canvass. But for some things I try to let letting myself be more open to experimentation and tricks, and that includes incorporating custom brushes created by artists that I like from around the web .

Fallen Metamorphosis - 2007
A fallen angel mid fall, undergoing the metamorphosis that will transform him from pure god to merely immortal. This was the first in a series of illustrations I began working on in 2007 about fallen angels.

The Witching Hour - 2012
This was my second "Conan" piece, and like the first one, it's me branching out a bit from my typical pin-up stuff.

Savage Sword - 2011
I tend to stick with pinups that often have little to no background work, or very design-oriented backdrops. This one I wanted to do something that would stand as more of a finished illustration, giving it the background and atmosphere that a pinup often lacks.

Shield Maiden - 2002
This was my first painting using Painter 7. I went through a lot of experimentation, finally settling on an opaque look as opposed to the watercolors I am usually fond of.
This painting was inspired by Eowyn, from Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

Moon Dance
This was a combination of both Painter 6 and 7 techniques. To achieve the water color effect I needed to go back to a previous version of the program because my PC was getting too slow for the latest one! The drawing was inspired by Luthien, from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion.

Fallen Queen - 2007
Fallen take many forms, and wings are not all feathers and down. Here a fallen queen of the north hides in her chambers, locking herself away from the mortals she rules. When will her exile from the Heavens end?

The Raven - 2007
The Raven. Most fallen angels are depicted as having white wings, but for this image the concept was of darkness amid light. The serpent in the background is a flying mount, complete with saddle and reins.

Avenger I - 2001
Avenger was something I wanted to do that was a little different from what I had been working on (what, no chicks with weapons?). I wanted to do a close up and work some interesting shapes into the armor. I used this opportunity to learn how to paint classic Watercolor clouds in Painter as well.

Avenger II - 2007
This image was an update to one from way back. Half man, half fallen, cast out of both the mortal and immortal kingdoms, the Nephilim are known for their differently colored eyes and strange beauty.

Martian Harem - 2008
For this piece I wanted to invoke an art nouveau style and apply it to the world of Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom. Originally I was going to just have one figure, (the sitting one) but liked the idea of combining two figures into one composition.

Savage! - 2009
This one started as a small sketch in my figure drawing book and evolved into a pen and ink before becoming a painting. For this image, I wanted to keep the rendering style simple and hover somewhere between my American and Japanese influences.

Defeat the C
This piece was made for my mother. A few years ago she was diagnosed with late stage cancer, and things seemed pretty bleak. My father asked me to create something with "one of my girls" to give my mom some much needed courage. And so this piece was all about fighting and defeating the big "C".

Blade Enchantress - 2001
This grew out of a small costume sketch I was doing for Soul Chaser Betty. I liked the little pose so much I finished it off and painted it up in Painter. Here I was looking for light washes that wouldn't compete too much with the ink line.

Savage Cave Girl - 2008
This one developed out of a con sketch I did for Capricon 08. I liked the idea of doing a cave girl in full color and went for it.

Princess of Thieves - 2006
For this piece I wanted to push my painting style into a more three dimensional direction, and so I was paying more attention to shape, form and shadow.

Pirate Queen of Mars (Jungle)
An older ink sketch I colored digitally to use as a color cover for my "Inkling" art book, (and as an opportunity to play around with some new digital brushes).

Pirate Queen of Mars (Sky)
Another version of this Martian Pirate. This time, I wanted to experiment with new Copic markers, so I created this hand-colored print. While the digital version added a jungle background, I decided that this version would be a pirate of the skies.

Moon Shamaness
A cheeky figure drawing pose inspired this one, and I just decided to go for it. My goal was to try and bridge the gap between my more stylized two dimensional "iconic look" and three dimensional art.
