Thursday, February 13th is the return of Capricon, the long running sci-fi and fantasy convention in Wheeling IL!
I’ve been going to Capricon since around 1990, when I attended with the other members of the Harper College Science Fiction and Fantasy Club—We were called “LV-427,” because the guy running it got the name of the planet from Aliens wrong (Nice going, Bob! Oh well, maybe it was the planet next door?).
Every Capricon has a theme, and this year’s (number 40!) is the Tropic of Capricon: Fun in the sun, sandy beaches, and jungle adventures! This is always a great show for fans of sci-fi and fantasy in all forms! There’s a dealers room, film room, anime room, and a gaming room, as well as the art show, con suite, and lots of chances to meet authors and socialize with other geeks at hotel parties!
Anywho, I’ll be at the show participating in panels (and even moderating a few).
Friday @ 1PM in Ravinia A – World Building: Fantasy Outside European Culture
Description: Our vision of “fantasy” fiction is often intertwined with European cultural tropes of heraldry, swords and sorcery. Our panelists discuss writing fantasy outside of these tropes, and how to create exciting worlds that draw their inspiration from the rich diversity of our planet and our imaginations.
Friday @ 4PM in Botanic B-C: Fostering Your Own Creativity (moderating)
Description: Creating in any form can help fight stress. It can also be hard to get into the zone when life is stressful. Panelists and audience share their strategies for staying creative in stressful times in this roundtable discussion.
Saturday @ 10AM in Willow A – Storytelling Through Comics (Moderating)
Description: Comics combine visual and written words to powerful effect. Our panel of comics artists, writers, and readers discuss the genre.
In addition, I’ll be hanging out at the Autographing Tables Saturday @ 4PM for about an hour with my comics and art books. You’ll also find my latest books, prints, and comics in the print shop, as well as a few original pieces hanging in the art show!
